National Senior Citizens Law Center
The National Senior Citizens Law Center is a non-profit organization whose principal mission is to protect the rights of low-income older adults.
Through advocacy, litigation, and the education and counseling of local advocates, they seek to ensure the health and economic security of those with limited income and resources, and access to the courts for all.
FY Eye recently implemented a campaign for the NSCLC to help seniors whose social security benefits were suspended or denied between 2000 and 2006 be given the chance to re-establish eligibility.
The NSCLA provides guidance for advocates who are helping Martinez class members claim the full benefits they are due under the recent settlement. In addition to abandoning the illegal policy, SSA has agreed to repay more than $700 million in benefits that were unlawfully withheld from 80,000 people whose benefits have been suspended or denied since January 1, 2007. All told, over 200,000 people will benefit from the settlement.
As part of a pilot program to reach vulnerable senior citizens, FY Eye worked with NSCLC to design and place an outreach announcement throughout at-risk neighborhoods in the San Francisco and Oakland Bay area. To reach pedestrian traffic, bus (transit) shelters were the best option. We were able to secure 25 shelters in key locations to specifically target seniors that might benefit from the Martinez case and the grassroots organization in place to help individuals reclaim their benefits.
