The YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood
The YM & YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood, established in 1917, is a multi-service Jewish community center, providing educational, recreational, and social services for member/clients from pre-school to homebound frail elderly in both individual and group settings. As such, the agency has developed a long established reputation among the many ethnic and socioeconomic groups who live in the community as a place where they can come together and participate in activities in an environment which is both welcoming and non-judgmental.
Washington Heights and Inwood are inner city neighborhoods where the different ethnic (Latino—predominantly
Dominican, Caucasian—both Jewish and non-Jewish, Asian and African American) groups interact on a daily basis in shops, schools and service centers. The community is typified by an immigrant population, with the earlier Irish Catholic and German Jews now being joined by those from the Dominican Republic and the former Soviet Union. Each ethnic group has its own period of transition as individuals acclimated to a new society. During this period many families require financial assistance as well as social service.
The Y has provided the bridge to these many populations over the past number of years. Opening its doors to the
community at large, the Y has provided a comfortable setting for people of all cultures to participate in its programs. The Y plays a very important role in the community, in that it is the only agency in Washington Heights/Inwood to open its doors to the community at large.
The Y currently offers Infant and Toddler programs, a Nursery School, a Health and Fitness Center, an After-School Program, Day Camp, Mentoring and Literacy programs, Teen Recreation and Socialization programs, Fitness Center with classes, Adult Cultural and Recreational programs, Émigré Services, a senior residence for low-income elderly, Meals-on-Wheels, and a full service Senior Center, along with many other programs and services. They constantly strive to meet the ever changing needs of their community.
